ISST Girls Field Hockey - The International School of The Hague win silver!
Posted 10/11/2014 20:05

This year the ISST Girls Field Hockey tournament was held at The British School of Brussels. six schools participated in a round robin schedule with each team playing two matches on the first two days and one match on the final day.

The first match that ISH played was against The British School of Paris. The girls were a little nervous and conceded a goal early in the match. They responded well with two goals being scored in quick succession after the halftime break. However, BSP scored through a well-executed short corner which resulted in a 2-2 draw.

ISH played The American School of London in their second match. Both teams competed very well but ISH worked very hard and won the game by 5-3.

On the second day of the tournament ISH were to face The British School of Brussels. In our previous encounter BSB won 7-0 so we were determined not to repeat this result. After a change in strategy ISH battled hard and did not allow the quick BSB players any room to run at speed towards our goal. The first goal was scored by ISH and two more quickly followed. We finally won 3-0 demonstrating that we had learnt from the previous game versus BSB.

The second match on the second day was against The International School of Brussels. ISH played a solid game against this team and won 3-0.

After four matches ISH had 10 points and The British School in The Netherlands had 12 points from four victories. At this stage of the tournament due to other results ISH were guaranteed at least a silver medal. To win the gold we needed to beat BSN in our final game.

So the final match of the tournament was between BSN and ISH. both teams in contention for the gold medal. We had nothing to lose! The beginning of the match saw both teams playing attacking hockey but demonstrating excellent defence. After a fantastic run down the left hand side of the pitch ISH scored a superb goal to lead 1-0. However, BSN came back with strength and determination a quickly equalised. In the final two minutes of the match ISH were awarded a penalty corner but BSN successfully defended it. The final score was 1-1 so BSN became champions and ISH runners up.

Mr. Brooks and Ms. Margueirat, the team coaches, are really proud of all the girls in the team and delighted to witness their determination to do their best and never give up.

The ISH squad members are; Annabel Sips (vice-Captain), Anne Gaanderse, Dominique Wolters, Ella Scheltinga, Evie van de Horst, Holly Roberts, Kate Mitchell, Laura de Herde (Captain), Lauren van der Meer, Reena van de Leemput, Saskia Buijs, Tommie Bangma and Lianne Granston.
