Special Subjects
In some cases, teachers other than the child's home room teacher will take
lessons in this section of the timetable. The details change depending on the age of the child.
Languages
| Dutch | Children in all age groups learn Dutch from a Dutch native speaking teacher. |
| English as an Additional Language (EAL) |
For a number of our children for whom English is not the first language, the curriculum is supported by four teachers. Children are taught within the class setting or in a small group. EAL support begins in Year 1. |
| Mother Tongue Programme | Children's development of their own mother tongue and culture is encouraged. Classes in German, Spanish, French, Hebrew, Russian, Italian and Dutch are currently offered. |
Swimming Lessons
Children in Year 4 receive swimming lessons provided by the Gemeente (Municipality).
This course runs throughout the whole academic year. Swimming is a compulsory part of
the curriculum for Year 4. If a student is medically unfit for swimming lessons, a doctor's
note should be sent to the home room teacher. If a child does not take part in the swimming
lesson he or she remains at school and is supervised by another home room teacher. It is not
possible for non-participants to accompany the class to the pool. Like all Dutch primary schools,
swimming lessons are arranged in this way to ensure a concentrated focus is placed on swimming
during the year. We also encourage all parents to seek swimming clubs in the local community.
Physical Education
All children have two lessons of physical education per week.
The kit for PE is the PE shirt (available for purchase from the school book store), shorts or
tracksuit trousers, gym shoes and socks (please vary according to weather). The kit for
Swimming is swimwear and swimming cap (optional).
Music
Music is also taught by a specialist teacher. The music curriculum, where possible, links
with the IPC units of work. Composition, performance, listening and appreciation skills
are the main elements of music lessons.
ICT
In information communication and technology, children learn about applying technology in order to gather, use and exchange information.
