C&S / CAS

IB MYP Community and Service
C&S
(Years 7-11)

Community and Service is one of five 'Areas of Interaction' within the Middle Years Programme. This compulsory component of the IB MYP supports the ISH's community school ethos. C&S service activities can take a wide variety of forms, for example, recycling, helping with school events or bake sales for fundraising.

At the start of the school year, each student receives a Community and Service booklet. Within this booklet they record the service activities completed throughout the year.  They are awarded credits for service activities. A minimum of 15 credits per year are required for satisfactory completion of the school's C&S requirement.

Students' involvement in Community and Service helps to develop their awareness and understanding of different communities and cultures.

In general, 1 credit is the equivalent of 1 hour of service given. Credits are only given for services that are performed successfully. Students must complete at least two separate tasks, and in doing so receive service credits from more than one source.

IB DP Community, Action and Service
CAS
(Years 12-13)

CAS is a framework for experiential learning, designed to involve students in new roles. The emphasis is on learning by doing real tasks that have real consequences and then reflecting on these experiences over time. It is felt that the most meaningful CAS experiences come from spending time with others to build relationships and develop self-worth of both server and served.

The IBO's goal of educating the whole person and fostering caring and socially responsible attitudes comes alive in an immediate way when students reach beyond themselves and their books … through CAS!

CAS aims to develop a spirit of open-mindedness, lifelong learning, discovery and self-reliance. It wants to encourage the development of new skills on many levels (creative, physical and social skills). It should inspire a sense of responsibility towards all members of the community. The end goal is to have students with an informed heart. This fits in with the schools strategic plan of focusing on global awareness and helping 3rd culture children to become global citizens.

CAS Requirements

-A minimum of 150 CAS hours are required for the IB Diploma, divided equally among Creativity, Action and Service activities.

-There must be a variety of at least three different activities for each area of CAS, making a total of at least nine activities.

-Activities must be a balanced mix from both in and out of school
