theory of knowledge

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is an interdisciplinary requirement intended to stimulate critical reflection on the knowledge and experience gained inside and outside the classroom. The course challenges students to question the bases of knowledge, to be aware of subjective and ideological biases and to develop the ability to analyse evidence that is expressed in rational argument.  TOK is a key element in encouraging students to appreciate other cultural perspectives.

TOK is an important and integral part of the IB course. Students cannot be awarded the IB Diploma unless they have completed a TOK course, even if they have completed all other subject requirements.

TOK is not a `subject' in the strict sense of the word - it is designed to encourage new knowledge and increase a student's understanding of what he/she has already learned and to help the student to reflect upon it.

Assessment

As an integral part of the IB programme, TOK is subject to assessment. It is, naturally, the task of the teacher to evaluate the intellectual achievement and diligence of students throughout the course. IB regulations state: " .... assessors will look for evidence in students work that they have addressed the issues in the TOK syllabus."

There are two principal areas of assessment:

Area 1
An essay of between 1200 and 1600 words in length on a title chosen from the IB prescribed list. This essay is externally assessed and accounts for two thirds of the final TOK grade.
Area 2
A number presentations which are assessed internally. The best of these accounts for one third of the final TOK grade.

Failure to complete the assessment and subject requirements results in the awarding of an 'N' grade for TOK and thus excludes the student from receiving an IB Diploma.
