technology
Technology is a compulsory subject in Years 7, 8 and 9 that offers an excellent opportunity for
the kind of holistic learning that is fundamental to the MYP.
We work with Apple Macintosh computers in a networked environment.
Students save their work on a file server, using individual password protected accounts.
These accounts can be utilised for all other subjects.
The first year of the syllabus concentrates on basic computing skills with an emphasis on practical work (two lessons per week).
Students learn about the specific hardware and software used in the computer labs. They use the design cycle
to explore solutions to real problems through a variety of tools, systems and materials.
In Year 8 Technology is divided into two subject components, Information Technology and Design Technology.
Information Technology
In Information Technology students develop their understanding of information systems using word processing,
database, presentation and spreadsheet software. We use dedicated and sophisticated software that allows
students to go into details and produce a higher level of practical work.
Design Technology
In Design lessons, students are concerned with people's needs and with developing appropriate
responses to those needs through technology. Students use a broad range of materials and resources
to create and present solutions for real situations.
In Year 9 students are expected to understand most of the specialised and specific functions of
programmes, applications and materials. They develop empathy by exploring the impact of technology
on society and develop their understanding of the design cycle in preparation for the MYP Personal
Project of Year 10.
