Navigating Dutch Roads
Resources from The Hague Municipality
Please find below a link to information from the Municipality about cycling safety in The Hague, as well as practical information about where to park your bike, and how to take it with you on public transport.
Safe Cycling Resources and Videos
We are working on resources more specific to our school, and more age-appropriate for our Primary and Secondary children.
In the meantime, below are some resources from the University of Utrecht, and a variety of other sources that give you good information on what cycling is like in The Netherlands, and what to look out for. We have highlighted some take aways from each lesson, since parts of the videos will be specific to Utrecht.
What do bikes need to have?
Take aways from this lesson
- Make sure your, or your child's bike have all the safety gear necessary .
- It ensures that you are more visible, and more likely to be heard.
- Don't necessarily cycle like the Dutch. Some habits are best left for when you feel super comfortable and aware on the roads.
Simple Rules to stay safe on the road
Take aways from this lesson:
- Make sure you make eye contact with drivers so that you know they've seen you.
- It's important at each crossing to figure out who has right of way.
- Without other road signage or markings, traffic that comes from the right has right of way.
- Stick out your hand to let other road users know what you are planning.
Parking your bike
Take aways from this lesson
- Make sure you lock your bike wherever you park it.
- Only park your bike in spaces that are allowed.
- The Hague, like Utrecht has manned bicycle parking in the city centre and by the station.
Some more general bike rules
Take aways from this lesson
- how to rent and park a bike at the station
- simple traffic rules about giving right of way
- what some of the words surrounding cycling sound like in Dutch
Road signage
Take aways from this lesson:
- Gives you clarity on what the road signs mean here.
- So you know where you can cycle, which signs you should follow.
Parent Badges & Student ID cards
Badge/ID Card Process
In this section, please find diagrams illustrating when you receive a badge of locker card, depending on when a family starts at school. Please not that only Secondary students are given a student badge.
If you have any questions about the badges or locker cards, please e-mail ishbadges@ishthehague.nl
The student ID card also has the following functions in school:
- opens a student's locker
- opens the entrance gates
- allows students to borrow books from the library
- allows students to print

Calendar New Parents
Start of the school year
Weekly Newsletter
Where to find the newsletter?
When your child has had their first week at school, you will receive an e-mail with you login details for the parent portal on the website. On each Friday afternoon, you can find this week's weekly newsletter in the navigation on the portal.
You will receive an e-mail prompt at around 17:00 on Friday afternoon, with a direct link to the newsletter. It then remains there for you to read the whole week.
Where can I find previous issues?
We don't issue a complete edition for each week, but if you have a look in the useful links on the right of the page, there's a link that says have a look look previous issues, and you will be able to find a repository of all the items that were shared in the newsletter by category - general news, year group update, and principals' update
What types information can I find?
It contains general information for both the Primary and Secondary school, and year group specific news for Secondary. Primary parents receive year group specific news via seesaw, shared directly by the teachers.
Principals' Update
Before every half term holiday, the Primary and Secondary Principal's give an update in the newsletter that goes into more detail about what has been happening in the building. Occasionally, if there is special news to share, there will be an extra edition. In these cases, the e-mail you receive letting you know your newsletter is available, will let you know this message is also there.
Calendar
At the bottom you can find events highlighted by section of the school, and the full parent calendar underneath. This is a portal calendar, not available on the public site.
In the right navigation there is also a calendar that highlights Parent Association events.
