In some cases, teachers other than the child's class teacher will take lessons. The details change depending on the age of the child.
Children in all age groups learn Dutch from a native speaking teacher. The programme is interactive and encourages the children to learn about the history and culture of their host country whilst developing fluency in spoken and written Dutch.
Music is taught by two specialist teachers. The music curriculum, where possible, links with the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) units of work. Composition, performance, listening and appreciation skills are the main elements of music lessons.
All children have physical education lessons taught by our two specialist teachers. The kit for PE is the PE shirt (available for purchase from the school book store), shorts or tracksuit trousers, gym shoes and socks.
Children in Year 4 receive swimming lessons provided by the Municipality of The Hague. This course runs throughout the whole academic year. Swimming is a compulsory part of the curriculum for Year 4. The kit for Swimming is swimwear and swimming cap (optional). If a student is medically unfit for swimming lessons, a doctor's note should be sent to the class teacher. If a child does not take part in the swimming lesson he or she remains at school and is supervised by another teacher. It is not possible for non-participants to accompany the class to the pool.
Like all Dutch primary schools, swimming lessons are arranged in this way to ensure a concentrated focus is placed on swimming during the year. We also encourage all parents to seek swimming clubs in the local community.
